more with less, you're in the midst of your own slowdown
or recession! Whatever the cause or severity, there are

Create Your
Own Economic Stimulus Program!
Dear
Colleague, if you're in the midst of an economic slowdown,
you are obviously not alone. Our suggestion? Come out of
it by taking control again. Economic ups and downs occur
all the time.
Quite frankly, if your budget's cut or you are asked to do
more with less, you're in the midst of your own slowdown
or recession! Whatever the cause or severity, there are
steps you must take to create your own stimulus as a
leader to solve the problem just like any other.
First let's on the basics.
Perform "X-Ray" exercises on your challenges by working
with your team to examine what you do, how and why you do
it plus how you might do it better.
1. Identify the challenges
2. Uncover potential opportunities
3. Develop action plans based on;
(a) the best possible proven solutions for addressing
the challenges, plus
(b) leverage the opportunities again applying proven
methodology
4. Implement your plans
5. Monitor results, learn from successes and failures then
make needed adjustments, and
6. Celebrate!
Here's a sample exercise;
1. Identify the challenges
One of your challenges may be that you are not able to
provide all the training think the organizations needs
because your training budget is cut or you are faced with
reducing your training headcount.
2. Uncover potential opportunities
As a result of your training budget issue, sustaining
your training programs becomes a challenge in and of
itself. Opportunities you uncover might include --
(a) Invite the trainer onsite to your facility to
minimize travel and hotel costs to off-site live training,
or/and (b) You can work with the trainer to deliver
the training online via a web conference.
However, if you can afford it I recommend you train your
team off-site and in an interactive setting. Adults
learn better that way.
3. Develop action plans
When you create your plan of action, you would want to
justify what you are doing. You would also want to
minimize your risk of failing. For example, your
plan should seek to select programs modeled after what is
proven and validated not experimental.
4 & 5. Act to Implement your plan. It
is advisable to document your actions and findings because
you'll learn much more from what you've done, what worked
and what did not work. Finally, you may also come away
with some great methodologies for the bad and the good
time.
6. At the end, Celebrate! I dont think
we do enough of this. Save some room in your
planning so in the end, you and your team have something
left over to truly celebrate. And it doesn't have to
be expensive either, although if you have enough left
over, you can make it so. It makes us better leaders
and managers.
Ok, I made it sound easy and it is! Although it can
be quite trying.
We wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas season and a
great year in 2009.
Much
success,
