The Incredible Machine called Human!

Greetings!

At a recent gathering of talent recruiters, a prevailing leadership challenge cited was employee retention, a thorny issue no doubt for many organizations.  Loosing good members of your team is caused by different factors not the least of which is our appetite for numbers at the expense of proper maintenance for these complex "machines" at our disposal we call human beings.

Of course, target benchmarks are important and invaluable to help us run operations.  Nonetheless, employees are far too complex to run by numbers alone.  They need (and want) to be heard, developed and nurtured.  They want to have a positive sense of self-worth associated with what they do.  They want to grow with you and they care a great deal about the value others place on their work.  They also want their service to reflect high quality.  Yet its easy to ignore these factors as we grind through targets and benchmarks.  Its like running a piece of equipment non-stop without maintenance.

Consider This--
Challenge your leadership team to genuinely care about their people as they interface with them. Spend an extra minute or so finding out what their needs are.  What obstacles they need removed that impedes their performance improvement.  Implement development initiatives you have been putting off.

Remember, the "saw will cut better and faster when you sharpen it".  The best use of targets and benchmarks?  As guideposts to support your communications, be it setting goals, giving recognition, improving performance or conducting performance appraisals.  Employees are vital and very expensive "machines" your organization needs.  They need "maintenance" to not only get the best out of them, but to keep them too.

Much success,
