NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee correction
officials say they're broadening their efforts to help ex-convicts
stay out of prison and become productive citizens.
State Board of Probation and Parole Chairman Charles Traughber
said his agency and the state Correction Department are working
together to adopt initiatives that research shows have been
effective in other states.
A report released last month by the Pew Center on the States shows
that one in 31 adults in America is in prison or jail, or on
probation or parole. In Tennessee, one in 40 adults is under
correctional control.
The report suggested states make a greater effort to prevent those
individuals who may be on probation or parole from returning to
prison and to strengthen their "community corrections systems."
